ABOUT

Hi! We are Ellie and Lucie, cousins, detectorists and authors. With over 5 years of experience out in the field (literally), we like to think we know a thing or two about the art of digging holes.

Metal detecting for us was once a lockdown hobby… now it’s pretty much taken over both of our lives. Roman Found began as a creative outlet, a way to share our adventures with fellow diggers, hobbyists, collectors and enthusiasts through the power of the internet—we never could’ve dreamed that we would connect with so many people.

Our biggest inspiration will always be our finds and the stories they hold. Half of what we do is in the research, searching beyond the dirt, between the pages of a reference book for that tangible link back through decades, centuries or even a millenia; a picture slowly building around that object we’ve pulled from the earth, be it a button, buckle or Roman coin.

Recently, there has been a massive resurgence of public interest in history and in the stories still lost within our landscape. Metal detecting, as a result, has become, dare we say it, trendy… As active self recorders with the British Museum’s Portable Antiquities Scheme and PLA Permit Holders, we aim to highlight the responsible side of metal detecting through our adventures, adding to the public record responsibly and increasing the archaeological understanding of our region.
